Glossary of Terms and Acronyms Access Ramp: A roadway that connects two or more thoroughfares Address Point: A GIS point that defines the location of a civic address Address Range: A set containing all address point numbers along each side of a road segment Attribute: A characteristic of a GIS feature Barrier: An obstruction built to control or prevent vehicle traffic Boarding Point: A geographic location of a place to board some form of trans- portation, such as a ferry Bulb: e rounded end of a cul-de-sac Bullnose: e physical end of a structure dividing a ramp from the roadway and often having a crash cushion Carriageway: One of the two sides of a road where traffic travels in one direction only, in one or more lanes Central Island: A built-up curb, possibly with vegetation, in the centre of a cul- de-sac's bulb Centreline: A line that runs along the centre of a carriageway Collector: A minor thoroughfare with property access which feeds traffic onto arterial roads Collection Corridor: A lane used to approach and exit a toll booth Cul-de-sac: A street with only the one and same inlet and outlet Dead End: A street with only one end connected to another street (cf. Cul-de- Sac) Digitization: e conversion of analogue source data to a digital representation End Point: e last coordinate in a line End of Road: e point at which vehicle traffic cannot proceed Exit Ramp: A roadway for to access or exit from a highway or freeway Expansion Joint: A mechanical connection point that holds two structures together while safely absorbing temperature-induced expansion and contraction of each of the structure's building materials Freeway: An unimpeded roadway that is high-speed, multi-lane—with four or more lanes—and is accessed only at an interchange From-To: An attribute that defines a road segment's beginning and end inter- secting road names Gap: An unintentional blank space between the end points of two different road segments of digital line features Grade: A feature's vertical location relative to ground level Grade Separated Road Crossing: e point where two or more roads cross each other at different elevations Community Road Network Guide to Best Practices v4.0 vi
