Figure 28 Relationship between Road Classes Freeway Major Arterial Minor Arterial Collector Local Lane Highway Freeways Freeways are unimpeded, high-speed, multi-lane—with four or more lanes—thoroughfares accessed only at interchanges (i.e., access ramps with grade separated road crossings) with their intersecting roads. Freeways have no at-grade access, nor do they include any direct property access (e.g., driveways, lane-ways or farm field access points). Highways Highways are high-speed, multi-lane—with two to six lanes— thoroughfares. ey have a combination of interchanges with at-grade controlled access points. However, they may include some direct property access: usually for farm properties. Major Arte- rial Roads ese are multi-lane thoroughfares with high traffic capacity for two or more lanes. ey include controlled access points (i.e., traffic lights), and they provide limited direct property access.
