Map of the Month: Average Annual Canadian Solar Resource
This map is part of a presentation of potential solar energy by direct normal irradiance in Canada. It is based on 564 individual WY3 files of hourly solar data from weather monitoring stations throughout Canada. The WY3 files were batch-converted and processed using Microsoft Excel macros and then merged and summarized using ArcGIS Pro. A raster surface was created using the spline tool in ArcGIS Spatial Analyst to fill in the space between weather stations and to give a general view of solar energy potential across Canada.

Community Map of Canada – Style of the Month: "Getting Prehistoric!”
This month, the Community Map of Canada is going back to dinosaur times with this "Getting Prehistoric" custom basemap style created by dinosaur enthusiast and Alberta-lowlands-based Community Map Analyst Kyle Constance.

Given that the basemap is republished every 72 hours and syncs data daily from over 400 contributors, the basemap is far from extinct. In fact, the basemap's precision and accuracy make other basemaps look prehistoric!

This custom style is the only thing about the Community Map of Canada that is fossilized. Icons of different dinosaur species symbolize cities and highways, and claw prints symbolize trail lines. The background of the basemap resembles the red sands of Alberta's badlands, and the pink hues of roads represent the colour of minerals and sandstone rock found in Canada's most prominent dinosaur regions, Drumheller AB and the T. Rex Discovery Centre in Eastend SK.

You can explore the July Style of the Month and more in our style gallery!

The image shows a map of Canada at a national extent, with the land cover a sandy red-beige colour and the oceans a deep textured blue. The country label “Canada” is symbolized by a large T-rex dinosaur symbol while all major cities are symbolized with smaller raptor dinosaurs. The land masses of Greenland and the United States visible on the left and right of the image are symbolized with different species of dinosaurs.
