Zoning Mapping Best Practices

Is there a way to leverage zoning information to improve the current land planning process? To answer that question, Esri Canada’s Land Information Solutions team has created an ArcGIS StoryMap about best practices for Zoning Mapping – based upon experiences with our customers and using customer examples from across the country. Dive into our brief blog post and our linked ArcGIS StoryMap below for some seamless zoning mapping and bylaw strategies ensuring less friction and enabling better and faster decisions for sustainable development. From digital tools to increased information access, read on to discover the keys to effective zoning mapping!

In the digital age, maps have become more than simple geographical representations—they’re powerful tools for storytelling, data visualization and public engagement. As governments, planners and organizations seek to make complex zoning bylaws accessible and understandable for anyone who needs them, integrating data with mapping platforms offers a modern solution. By creating intuitive, interactive web maps and mapping applications, we can transform how citizens, stakeholders and decision-makers engage with urban planning and zoning regulations.

At the heart of this transformation lies a simple concept: improving both the clarity of maps and their integration with key policies like zoning bylaws. In our StoryMap, we propose some basic best practices—rooted in real-world examples—that can help guarantee your zoning mapping efforts are both effective and user-friendly. Sounds great, right!?

By following these best practices, you can ensure that your zoning information is more than just a visual tool—it becomes an interactive platform for transparency, engagement and education. Whether you’re linking maps to bylaws, updating the most current zoning data or fostering community engagement, the possibilities are endless when it comes to enhancing accessibility and clarity for all users.

Details are available in our story— we encourage you to review the StoryMap, and feel free to reach out to the Esri Canada Land Information Solutions Team if you have any questions! We hope this inspires you to explore the ideas discussed in our StoryMap and consider putting them into practice. Together, we can implement a zoning mapping approach that is not just useful, but transformative.
