City of Brampton and Teranet Win 2018 Esri Special Achievement in GIS Awards
Both a city government and a business see a huge return on their GIS technology investment
SAN DIEGO, Esri User Conference – July 12, 2018 – Esri Canada congratulates both Teranet and the City of Brampton for receiving the 2018 Esri Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award. These two winners were chosen from thousands of Esri customer organizations worldwide for their effective enterprise implementation of geographic information system (GIS) technology to deliver better services.
Teranet, Canada's leader in the delivery and transformation of statutory registry services has migrated all their core spatial data into Esri's ArcGIS platform. It now forms part of one of the most advanced land registration systems in the world.
Brampton developed Brampton GeoHub, an open data portal using ArcGIS Open Data, which has increased the transparency of the City government to residents and saved money. This collaborative technology makes it much easier for people to access information like property maps, bike maps and zoning by-laws.
“Both Brampton and Teranet, each with very different requirements, have seen an almost immediate return on their investment. Teranet has a massive amount of data to store and manipulate, and they require very high security on that data. Brampton is using their GeoHub to better serve their residents while saving a huge amount of staff time,” said Alex Miller, president, Esri Canada.
Teranet manages one of the largest land registration systems in the world. They provide property information to real estate, financial services, government, utilities, and legal markets. When they had to replace their legacy mapping platform, Al Buckle, Director of Operations, noted, “We were looking for a secure, and stable GIS platform that could scale with Teranet’s growth. We chose Esri Canada's solution because of their market leadership, advanced parcel data model and extensive technology stack.”
Brampton’s GeoHub was built to advance the City’s goal of Open Government. It was created in collaboration with multiple city departments in only a few weeks, and because it helped people find information themselves, the saving of staff time started right away. “In the first year, the GeoHub saved the City about 588 hours of staff time and the open datasets found on the site and used by the public rose from 15 to 154,” said Matthew Pietryszyn, team leader, GIS & Open Data. “Municipal leaders now understand that when you make good, purposeful data available publicly, it’s easier for businesses to make the decision to locate in their city. Students have access to accurate data to analyze and understand their city. Small businesses benefit and are able to better grow the local economy.”
