Mapping the Future with Cree Nation of Mistissini
The Cree Nation of Mistissini has strengthened their cottage lot update process using digital mapping technology. This transformation has streamlined administrative processes and enhanced service to community members.
The Cree Nation of Mistissini, located on the shores of Québec’s largest freshwater lake, is taking major strides toward sustainable land stewardship with the launch of a centralized geographic information system (GIS) for cottage lot management.
Until recently, the Cree Nation of Mistissini used a combination of CAD files, spreadsheets and paper records to track cottage lot parcels. As community needs grew, this approach made it more difficult to respond quickly and consistently. Through a collaborative partnership with Esri Canada, the Cree Nation of Mistissini has transitioned to a GIS-based system that centralizes key data while keeping decision-making grounded in community control.
The new GIS system supports timely, transparent decision-making and lays the groundwork for long-term planning. Administrators can now visualize lot statuses, update information in real time and respond to applicants more effectively. It also opens the door for future enhancements that reflect community priorities. Most importantly, this transformation strengthens the Cree Nation of Mistissini’s ability to serve their members and uphold their relationship with the land.
