Getting Technical - November 2019

What are the major updates for Esri product security materials? What is the technology powering the MCSC rescu app? How do you transfer an ArcGIS Desktop Concurrent Use License using the Online Authorization method? What’s new in CityEngine 2019.1? Find out these and more in November’s Getting Technical blog post.

Features

Major Updates of Esri Product Security Materials
Security is about continuous improvement, which also applies to the materials we post to the ArcGIS Trust Center for customer assurance.  As our product licensing models have evolved as well as security best practices, we’ve performed a significant update of the ArcGIS Secure Mobile Implementation Patterns whitepaper.  We’ve provided more context on our field operations product story, incorporated new mobile apps, expanded information concerning mobile device management, and updated our portal membership and ArcGIS user types – among other items.

Action Required to Continue Using SAML with ArcGIS Online
Customer administrators who have enabled the advanced SAML options ‘Enable Signed Requests’ and/or ‘Encrypt Assertion’ will need to obtain the new ArcGIS Online Service Provider metadata file and associate it with their Identity Provider before December 5, 2019.

What's new in CityEngine 2019.1
This release introduces the Guide Creation tool for convenient and precise creation of temporary guide lines. These drawing aids are useful for sketching 2D building footprints as well as modeling 3D mass models. When you switch a drawing tool into the planar drawing mode, all guides are projected onto the drawing plane for intuitive and efficient 2D sketching workflows.
Please note CityEngine Basic users will be converted to CityEngine and any maintenance quotes after October 2020 will be at the full CityEngine Maintenance fee.

Use World Imagery Wayback to create a custom basemap
The World Imagery basemap is regularly updated with newer imagery. When and where updates occur, the previous imagery is replaced and is no longer visible. In the vast majority of cases the updated imagery is better and more up-to-date and is preferred. However, there may be exceptions. For example, the previous imagery may better align with your GIS layers, or may offer fewer clouds. Wayback will allow you to use the version of World Imagery that best suits your needs.

GIS for good: Helping find missing children faster
The MCSC rescu app uses location intelligence to help police and concerned citizens find missing children in Canada. The online app puts missing children on a map and helps determine where they may have travelled. Working across all jurisdictions in Canada, the app holds promise for improved collaboration and speedier communications. Find out more about the technology powering the app.

FAQ:  What is the future of ArcPad?
ArcPad will be retired on December 31, 2020. ArcPad fills a necessary position in Esri's product offering by enabling GIS users to work with the many high-accuracy and rugged field devices running on Windows Mobile/Windows CE. But, it is important to note that ArcPad is a mature product that's closely tied to Windows Mobile, and Microsoft has stopped development for the Windows Mobile/Windows CE platform. As such, any future updates to ArcPad will be focused on critical bug fixes, and new app development will be focused on modern platforms (iOS, Android and Windows 10) and products such as Collector for ArcGIS, Survey123 for ArcGIS and AppStudio for ArcGIS. See the “What is the future of ArcPad?” question on the ArcPad Common Questions page.

App of the Month: Calgary’s City-Owned Cemeteries
Cemeteries are special places that preserve and honour the memories of those who have gone before us. Some cemeteries are privately managed, while others are run by municipalities. In Calgary, the City operates five cemeteries and an indoor mausoleum. They manage a cemeteries database with more than 138,000 individual records on names, plot locations and burial dates. To enable efficient public access to this information, Calgary built the City-Owned Cemeteries app, November’s App of the Month.

Recreating a classic story with ArcGIS StoryMaps
It’s been exciting to see the story maps community adopt ArcGIS StoryMaps, the second-generation storytelling tool that we released in July 2019. More stories are being created in ArcGIS StoryMaps these days than all the classic apps combined. But the question inevitably arises: Should I maintain my classic stories as is, or should I remake them in ArcGIS StoryMaps?
