Map of the Month: Seascapes, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador
From the 1990s onwards, multibeam sonar systems have provided geologists with very high-resolution terrain models of the sea floor, requiring a new approach to mapping. This seascape map is based on systematic multibeam sonar mapping supported by seismic data, sidescan sonograms, bottom photographs, video, submersible observations and grab samples. Placentia Bay, a large embayment on the south coast of Newfoundland, has a very complex seafloor, strongly conditioned by glaciers. The map shows 14 seascape types, together with inset maps of the bathymetry and backscatter (sediment texture) of the entire bay, and a few representative bottom photographs.

This map was originally published in the 2017 Map Calendar.
