New Resources for Higher Education: The Geodatabase Lab Series

Esri Canada's Education and Research group is dedicated to providing resources for all levels of GIS users. The most recent addition to our Lesson Planner are tutorials in part of the Geodatabase Lab Series for Higher Education. These tutorials are designed to help a student gain a deeper understanding of geodatabases and its uses in ArcGIS. Read more about the tutorials and begin using them today.

Our latest tutorials for Higher Education include the Geodatabase Labs Series which consist of tutorials and task-oriented assignments where students learn data modelling and design concepts, while exploring concepts and functionality of the geodatabase using the Canadian Municipal Data Model (CMDM), a proposed standard model for all Canadian municipalities, as it’s schema. More information on the can be found on our Esri Canada CMDM Web site.

The first set of tutorials in this lab series are part of the Basic Tutorial Package and are designed to provide you with an overview of Esri’s geodatabase storage format. The tutorials included in this package are:

  • Tutorial #1: Schema Loading
  • Tutorial #2: Data Loading and Transformation using Spatial ETL tools
  • Tutorial #3: Geodatabase Behaviour

The second set of tutorials in the lab series builds on the Basic Tutorial Package providing you with an understanding of advanced behaviour rules, advanced data types and geocoding techniques. The tutorials included in this package are part of the Intermediate Tutorial Package:

  • Tutorial #4: Relationship Classes and Topology
  • Tutorial #5: Geometric Networks and Geocoding

The last set of tutorials focus on the installation, configuration and implementation of an enterprise geodatabase. Connecting to a PostgreSQL DBMS, you will create the geodatabase and work through versioning and replication scenarios. The tutorials included in this package are part of the Advanced Tutorial Package:

  • Tutorial #6: Enterprise Geodatabase setup using PostgreSQL
  • Tutorial #7: Versioning
  • Tutorial #8: Data Distribution through Geodatabase Replication
