Introducing the Esri Canada K-12 New Teacher Award

We’re calling all teachers, student teachers, and teaching assistants with less than five years of teaching experience. We've got an exciting new challenge for you that’s launching this month. Don't miss this chance to innovate and inspire with ArcGIS!

The Esri Canada K-12 New Teacher Award recognizes creativity, innovation, and dedication to enhancing students' geographic literacy and analytical skills through ArcGIS software.

Here are the guidelines for this contest that begins on March 5th, 2024:

Create a student resource presented in an ArcGIS StoryMap format with at least two (2) web maps. The maps can be created in Map Viewer or as express maps. The student resource may include but is not limited to, the use of additional ArcGIS applications such as:

The New Teacher Award is a great opportunity to try something new and be creative with technology. Image from Canva.


  • Teachers and teaching assistants working for less than five years in the teaching profession from the start date of the competition
  • Teachers employed at a K-12 public, separate, private, or independent school (including home schools)
  • Preservice/student teachers without a prior teaching qualification enrolled in a teacher education program in a higher education institution in Canada
  • A resident of Canada residing in Canada at the time of award entry and the prize judging

There are some great prizes that will be awarded to the top three entrants:

  • First Prize: $1,000 CND
  • Second Prize: $500 CND
  • Third Prize: $250 CND

All entrants will receive a certificate of participation. Selected entrants will have their submissions shared on the Esri Canada K-12 Resource Finder and the Education and Research blog.

About the Author

Angela Alexander is a K-12 Education Specialist in the Esri Canada Education and Research group. She has over 15 years of experience working with educators across Canada. Angela focuses on producing geographic information system (GIS) and curriculum-specific resources, and conducting and creating custom workshops for educators. She manages the GIS Ambassador Program and is the Technical Chair for the annual Skills Ontario GIS competition. Angela also writes monthly posts for the Esri Canada Education and Research blog, highlighting K-12 educators and partners, new ArcGIS resources and GIS-related events.
