Features

2022 ArcGIS Online year in review
2022 introduced many improvements and new capabilities in ArcGIS Online and related products. Whether you’re making maps to fight wildfires, plan cities, increase resilience, respond to severe weather events, or improve your business, ArcGIS Online continues to evolve to better support your needs and activities.

Migrating to ArcGIS Pro
ArcGIS Pro is the premier tool for GIS professionals. It offers modern map authoring, advanced analysis, data visualization, extensibility, and complete integration with the ArcGIS system - allowing you to work faster and more efficiently.   While its predecessor, ArcMap, will continue to be supported until March 2026, guidance is on hand to help you begin your migration journey.

What's new in ArcGIS QuickCapture (December 2022)
ArcGIS QuickCapture is the fastest and simplest way to collect field observations at speed. With the click of a button, you can quickly conduct damage assessments, perform asset inventories, document issues, and report on important events. Integrated with the ArcGIS system, new observations made with QuickCapture in the field can be used instantly for better decision-making. We celebrate our last update before the end of 2022. This release includes two handy new features for administrators and QuickCapture authors.

What's new in ArcGIS Survey123 (December 2022)
We celebrate our last update before the end of 2022. This release is loaded with great new features and critical fixes. Read on to learn more about what’s new in ArcGIS Survey123 December 2022.

What's New in ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online (November 2022)
ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online is a SaaS that allows users and organizations to host, visualize, analyze, and share imagery in ArcGIS Online. As a member of the ArcGIS Image product suite, ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online assists organizations in quickly managing and sharing their imagery data without the need for infrastructure. Once you have all your imagery data organized, ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online then allows for analysis workflows, including deep learning. For this release, we are adding support for new sensors, support for the vector field template, a new multidimensional imagery layer experience, and additional performance improvements.

Enhance web app accessibility with Instant Apps
The goal of accessibility on the web is to create content that is accessible to all people, regardless of physical, mental, or behavioral disability. Esri is committed to creating accessible products and services compatible with the latest assistive technologies that conform to current software accessibility standards and guidelines. See Esri’s Accessibility site for more information on our accessibility efforts, links to product conformance reports, and other accessibility resources.

Identify Retiring v1 Esri Vector Basemaps using ArcGIS Notebooks
Esri’s version 1 (v1) vector basemaps will be retired December 1, 2022. After this date, web maps and apps that utilize these basemaps will need to reference another basemap listed in general availability. While you could manually check each of your map’s basemaps, let’s save some time and use the power of ArcGIS Notebooks to automate identification of any problematic basemaps!

Pop-ups: Arcade essentials
Layer pop-ups are an important part of crafting the complete map information experience. Pop-ups can transform an otherwise dull list of attributes into a far more meaningful display of intuitive and engaging information for your audience. Arcade can be thought of as a collection of useful tools that can be applied to craft the very best pop-ups, leveraging functions and logic to perform calculations and geometric operations, format text, access data from other layers, and much more.

How to summarize aggregate data using Arcade in popups
The November 2022 update of the ArcGIS Online Map Viewer added support for binning as an alternative to clustering and heat maps. Binning aggregates data to predefined cells, effectively representing point data as a gridded polygon layer. This post will demonstrate how you can use Arcade to create dynamic popup elements summarizing attributes from aggregated points in a bin’s popup.

Baby Steps to Quantum Leap
Maps have been an essential tool for utilities since their inception. With all the discussion around how ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Utility Network are revolutionizing the way, utility companies operate it only seemed appropriate to re-examine the history of GIS at utility companies and see how far we’ve come and where we’re going.

ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Engine in Databricks: Scalable Geospatial Analysis in a Data Science Workflow
Esri and Databricks collaborated on a blog that features advanced spatial capabilities of ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Engine in an Azure Databricks environment solving cross-industry use cases. Databricks provides an Apache Spark-based cloud platform to support big data analytics, data science and machine learning in a unified approach by combining data warehouses and data lakes into a lakehouse architecture. GeoAnalytics Engine brings geospatial analysis straight to your big data in the cloud wherever it lives—in a data warehouse, data lake, and more. The goal of this collaboration was to demonstrate how easily ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Engine can be plugged into Databricks architecture to extend cloud-based geospatial capabilities for organizations that need big data spatial solutions at speed and scale. Read the blog to discover how combining the power of GeoAnalytics Engine in a Databricks environment enabled challenging use cases to be solved.

Got five minutes? Get to know Esri Updated Demographics
Esri data is organized into groups of variables or statistical measurements connected by a common theme, such as spending behavior or demographic information. Understanding these different groups of data can help you locate what’s pertinent to your work and can lead you to discover data you didn’t even know you needed. This article is part of the blog series Got five minutes? Get to know… and outlines the most important details about Esri Updated Demographics

Browsing Related Records with the ArcGIS API for JavaScript
Relationships are essential in life whether they are personal with family or friends, work related with colleagues, etc. The same goes for relationships within your geographical data. Version 4.25 of the ArcGIS API for JavaScript (ArcGIS JS API) introduced a way to browse your data’s relationships through a feature’s pop-up. This is done through the RelationshipContent element. The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament has begun, so let’s explore an application that browses FIFA World Cup relationships!

Your Demographic Questions Answered
Demographic data helps us better understand the socioeconomic factors within our communities. We can learn more about the population, housing, jobs, poverty, and other features that can impact policy, logistics, and business decisions. Depending on your needs, there are various ways to find, access, and use demographic data using the power of mapping within ArcGIS. But sometimes knowing where to start can feel like a daunting task. With thousands of demographic attributes to choose from and hundreds of data layers to use in your maps, it can feel confusing how to properly use each nuanced attribute if you aren’t a trained demographer. This blog provides a list of some of the most common questions asked when mapping demographic data within ArcGIS. Jump to a question to gain insight and resources so that you can start mapping demographic data more confidently within your GIS projects today!

Share and View Your Drone Data Through These Three Microsoft Apps
Sharing your drone derived imagery products is an important part of the imagery workflow. While it is quite easy to create maps and web apps in ArcGIS Online, the ArcGIS suite also lets you meet your stake holders directly in the apps they work and collaborate in, like Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Power BI, or Microsoft Excel. Drone data adds context and perspective to the information in these apps. Specifically, your drone data can be easily accessible to show change over time, highlight important hazards and features, or add a beautiful but accurate backdrop to your data and conversations. Read this article to know how you can bring your crucial imagery to the people that need to see it.

Make this weird paper globe ornament please
It’s that time of year when geographers don our Stormy Kromer wool hats, pull the zipper a bit higher on our discounted Patagonia fleece vest, and venture out into the world of holiday social gatherings where we will, after sharing our profession in conversation, bear the patient burden of being asked, “hasn’t everything already been mapped?” or “so you mean like Google Earth?” It’s ok. We’re used to that and have a bevvy of responses all cued up, like “well occasionally there’s a volcano and we all rush to our desks to update the world’s maps” or “yeah…a bit like that…but with less Google and more Earth.”

Smart Forms aren’t just for ArcGIS Field Maps anymore
As a GIS professional, you’re no stranger to a little data editing and maintenance. But what if there was a way to reduce the time spent inputting data and tailor your editing experience in Map Viewer? Smart Forms allow you to do both by setting up your own custom data entry form for geographic features and their attributes. If you’re thinking “Smart Forms? I thought that was for ArcGIS Field Maps!” you’ll be happy to hear that Smart Forms are part of the ArcGIS ecosystem – meaning they work in ArcGIS Field Maps, web apps, Map Viewer, and any other app that uses the JavaScript 4x editor widget. This blog will walk through the key components of a Smart Form in Map Viewer, what’s new as of November 2022 in ArcGIS Online, and what’s coming next.

Boost your map tour experience with countdowns, 3D globes, and more
One of the core missions of ArcGIS StoryMaps has always been to enable people to tell place-based stories around the world that combine geography, media, and narrative in a way that no other storytelling platform does. That is why our team prioritized bringing the Classic Map Tour template into ArcGIS StoryMaps from the start.

Hot Tip: Create a great home page for your organization
Your organization home page is the place visitors and organization members will start. How your home page looks will create first impressions – not just about you as a GIS organization, but also about the quality and veracity of the maps and apps people will find there.
