Map of the Month: The Citizen Science of Litter
Following the theme of environmental preservation, this map focuses on the growing problem of litter in society. This map stands apart from others by providing the viewer with instructions on how they can participate in digital litter collection. I've collected more than 50,000 records of litter throughout BC. Even focusing on Prince George, there was still a high density of data points, so I thought it best to aggregate and display them using hex bins. I’ve provided examples of how to query litter data using attributes like location, time, object, material and brand, to get people thinking and maybe interested. This data is part of the global OpenLitterMap database.
Community Map of Canada - Style of the Month: "April Showers Bring May Flowers"
'April Showers Bring May Flowers' -- that's what the old adage says, and that's what the Community Map of Canada has conveyed in this custom Style of the Month for April 2023. As you zoom into this style, the style quite literally goes from April rain showers into May’s blossoming flowers.
The cloudy and rainy-designed land masses and oceans clear up and are replaced by flower-patterned land use areas, while cloudy highway and city symbology are replaced with flowers, leaves, and sunshine symbols as you zoom in.
Created by West-coaster, Kira-Marie Lazda, who is no stranger to rainy weather and early springtime flowers, this custom style for April 2023 was produced using the ArcGIS Vector Tile Style Editor tool. Find this style here, and be sure to use it to manifest early May flowers (and fewer April showers!)
