GIS for a Connected Coast Network | Broadband Internet | Telecommunications
How is geographic technology helping bridge the digital divide in remote communities? The Connected Coast project, spearheaded by a partnership of Strathcona Regional District and CityWest Telecommunications, aims to bring fibre internet to remote, rural coastal communities in British Columbia. The project involves installing a network of sub-sea cables that encircles Vancouver Island and connects Haida Gwaii and the mainland coast. Initially, the partnership used PDF documents to share data and project plans among them and with provincial agencies. Revision and versioning became a source of inefficiency. To combat this, an interactive, cloud-hosted map was put into place instead, showing all the necessary project details in one clean, simple interface. Now, edits can be quickly applied—and a version can be easily shared with the public via the project’s website.
