GIS Unlocks BC's Hydropower Potential

To meet growing energy demands, BC Hydro commissioned Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd. (KWL), a Burnaby-based consulting engineering firm, to conduct a study of hydroelectric potential across the province. In response, KWL built the powerful GIS-based Rapid Hydropower Assessment Model (RHAM) that enabled years of analysis to be conducted in a matter of days. As a result, the tool uncovered over 8,000 optimal sites to generate run-of river hydropower.
