It’s time to get started with the (New) Map Viewer

Looking for resources to get started with the (New) Map Viewer that came out of beta last year? Well, Esri Canada’s K-12 group has created some fun resources to begin your journey. Check out this blog post for more information.

ArcGIS Online users have had access to 2 map viewers since the “(New) Map Viewer” came out of beta in early 2021. However, up until last month, our group was only developing ArcGIS Online resources in the now “Map Viewer Classic!”

This blog post will highlight resources that we created using the “(New) Map Viewer.”  They include beginner tutorials, an activity, and a lesson to get you started!

Tutorials

Getting to know the (New) Map Viewer
In this tutorial, you will learn how to navigate and access the tools in the Map Viewer, also known as the New Map Viewer, in ArcGIS Online. The new design of this application includes two toolbars that allow you to access different tools when working with your data and map. These tools will be substantially expanded in future releases of the Map Viewer.

The (New) Map Viewer Basics
This tutorial will teach you the basics of navigating and using the (New) Map Viewer in ArcGIS Online. You will change a basemap, enable labels on a layer, view a table, create spatial bookmarks, view and hide layers, measure features on a map and save a map.

Adding and Working with Data in the Map Viewer

This tutorial will teach you how to add data (features and data layers) to the New Map Viewer. You will also learn how to filter data and change the display of data on your map.
Note: Before you work on this tutorial - you should complete the tutorial Getting to know the (New) Map Viewer. This resource goes over the different sections (Contents and Settings toolbars) of the Map Viewer and the available tools.

Activity

Quick Data, Cool Map
In this activity, you will learn how to access recent global earthquake data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to create a quick map in the ArcGIS Online Map Viewer. You will use GeoJSON data to make your map.

Lesson

Divergent, Convergent and Transform! What’s the deal with Plate Tectonics?
In this lesson, you will use ArcGIS Online to explore the dynamics of plate tectonics and locate key places in the world where geological activity is evident due to the movement of plates.
