Accelerating housing approvals in Canada: the vision behind Ratio.City

In this interview, Monika Jaroszonek and Erin Morrow, co-founders of Ratio.City, a division of Esri Canada to explore the challenges and opportunities in Canada’s housing industry.

They explain why building new housing in Canada—especially in large cities—is such a complex and time-consuming process. The fragmented, hard-to-access data landscape and the lack of shared tools between stakeholders were major barriers. That's why they built Ratio.City: a web-based platform designed to bring clarity and speed to the early stages of the housing development funnel.

By aggregating planning policies and zoning data from across 50 municipalities (covering 80% of the Canadian population), Ratio.City makes it easier for developers, planners, and municipalities to identify viable housing sites, evaluate their potential, and navigate the approval process.

The interview outlines how the platform grew to house Canada’s most comprehensive planning data set and highlights their mission to make housing delivery faster and more collaborative by putting authoritative data at everyone’s fingertips.
