An afternoon with Jack Dangermond

Esri Founder and President Jack Dangermond provided Australian audiences with a rare insight into the vision driving his GIS empire. He also shared his advice for getting the most from Esri’s world-leading technology – the ArcGIS platform. The event marked Jack's first Australian speaking appearance in almost a decade. He was joined on the day by other leading technology evangelists.

URISA’s 54th Annual GIS-Pro Conference concludes in Toronto

The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) recently held its annual GIS-Pro conference in Toronto. The conference drew over 350 participants, with some 200 from Canada and most of the remainder from the United States. In one of the conference highlights, Esri Canada Founder and President Alex Miller was inducted to the URISA GIS Hall of Fame.

Intelligent Cities Summit: Welcome to the Smart City

A city is really just a collection of things: streets, buildings, people, services, wires, pipes and laws. The Internet of things puts sensors in all sorts of places and devices, and those systems communicate and share data to produce interesting outcomes. The Intelligent Cities Summit, which was staged recently in Toronto, sought to understand how these technologies could be used to help the cause of urbanism.

Recorded Webinar: GSDI Coastal/Marine SDI Best Practice (registration required)

The Global SDI Association is engaged in a project investigating Coastal/Marine SDI Best Practice. Research on marine information geoportals started in 2014 and several workshops have been conducted on Marine SDI Best Practice. This webinar is the first in a series of this topic that will be held throughout 2017. This first webinar introduces the main Marine SDI concepts, challenges and identified best practice in various countries.

About the Author

Gordon Plunkett is the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) Director at Esri Canada. He has more than 30 years of experience in GIS and Remote Sensing in both the public and private sectors. He currently sits as a member of the Community Map of Canada Steering Committee, GeoAlliance Canada Interim Board of Directors, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Technical Committee, the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) Committee on Geomatics, the University of Laval Convergence Network Advisory Committee and the Advisory Board to the Carleton University Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre. During his career, Gordon has worked on projects in more than 20 countries and has contributed to numerous scientific conferences and publications. At Esri Canada, he is responsible for developing and supporting the company’s SDI vision, initiatives and outreach, including producing content for the SDI blog.
