City of Medicine Hat Wins 2022 Esri Special Achievement in GIS Award

GIS is an integral part of their operations and fundamental to the municipality’s cost savings

SAN DIEGO, Esri User Conference – July 14, 2022 – Esri Canada congratulates the City of Medicine Hat, Alberta for receiving Esri’s Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award. The winners of this award are chosen from thousands of Esri customer organizations worldwide, for their outstanding use of geographic information system (GIS) technology to solve problems.

Medicine Hat was recognized for improving enterprise asset management through GIS and establishing an integrated GIS strategy for the City, resulting in significant time and money savings and positioning the City to drive further efficiencies across its operations.

“Medicine Hat’s win demonstrates that a deeply integrated approach using GIS across the organization has resulted in doing more with less and has positioned them to meet the challenges of a fast-changing environment,” said Alex Miller, president, Esri Canada.

In 2021, Medicine Hat completed the adoption of a comprehensive, scalable system, the GIS-based Cityworks Asset Management solution, which allows them to proactively plan and maintain infrastructure assets—from wastewater pipes to park furniture and streetlights. Managers can now instantly share existing and upcoming asset management activities, and workers can track and follow their tasks in the office and in the field.

“Our investment in Enterprise Geographic Information Systems has led to more informed decisions, enhancing our financial sustainability and building a stronger community. We are proud of the individuals and team that worked on this initiative,” said Dr. Glenn Feltham, interim city manager, City of Medicine Hat.

The City continues to engage GIS-based solutions across departments, enabling them to share and leverage location data as part of city planning decisions like designing the infrastructure capacity for new neighbourhoods, supporting emergency management and determining the optimal location for new fire halls. They have built roadmaps for future GIS enhancements, from improvements in governance to the implementation of new online dashboards for monitoring operations. This wholescale cooperation and sophisticated collaboration, which allows access to better data for internal and external users, makes for well-informed decisions—saving time and money for residents and preparing Medicine Hat to effectively meet the challenges of a growing municipality.
