Episode 10: The One About Accessibility

Season 1 | Episode 10: The One About Accessibility

We kick off the new year by talking about incorporating accessibility in your GIS work and using ArcGIS QuickCapture to collect data on the go.

What's Making Us Mappy [2:53]

Our hosts share one cool thing that is catching their eye in the world of ArcGIS.

Mark kicks off the new year by highlighting a small but mighty new feature in ArcGIS StoryMaps. You can now use an image as a link, providing a way to link an image in your story to a URL that will launch when clicked.

Maggie dives into promoting her latest webinar, New Year, New Release! Introducing ArcGIS Pro 3.2. Register now for the big show on Thursday, February 1st (new date) or watch the recording after the live presentation. Join Maggie and Justin Brassard for an hour of the latest and coolest new features in ArcGIS Pro, our flagship desktop solution.

Inside the Arc [5:50]

Feature interview that takes our audience inside an Esri product or capability.

Maps and GIS are for everyone, so it’s important that our products are designed and readily available to all, with a diverse range of abilities.  It is important for us to create web content that provides equal access, reduces barriers and embraces inclusion.

To talk more about the intersection of GIS technology and accessibility, we are joined by our special guest, Klara Schmitt from Esri Inc. She works closely with incorporating accessibility for the ArcGIS Hub development team and is a passionate advocate for accessible web design.

Klara provides us with a great overview about how to think about accessibility in your ArcGIS work. Topics discussed include:

  • What is accessibility and why is it important?
  • How does Esri meet accessibility standards?
  • How can one make their maps more accessible?
  • How can GIS developers test their apps for accessibility?

Guest: Klara Schmitt, Principal Product Designer for ArcGIS Hub with Esri Inc. (LinkedIn)

GeoGeeks [18:59]

Rotation of Esri Canada panelists share what's new in ArcGIS technology.

Sue Enyedy, our resident Mobile Solutions GeoGeek, is back on the pod to talk about our under-the-radar data collection app – ArcGIS QuickCapture

As the name suggests, ArcGIS QuickCapture is the fastest and easiest app to collect data on the go.  Or as Sue aptly labels it, you can also think of it as the “big button” app.

Sue will walk us through the fundamentals about what QuickCapture is all about, including:

  • Why use ArcGIS QuickCapture?
  • How is it different from the other mobile apps (ArcGIS Field Maps, ArcGIS Survey123)?
  • How is this app being used in the real world?
  • What’s new with the product in its latest release?
  • What basics do you need to know to get started?

Guest: Sue Enyedy, Product Specialist, Mobile Solutions at Esri Canada (LinkedIn)

M versus M [28:06]

Our hosts quiz each other about all things ArcGIS and GIS.

Mark is in a nostalgic old man mood, so he quizzes Maggie about Esri’s oldie but goodie (and still popular) file format – the shapefile! Funny fun fact - a shapefile is not a single file but is comprised of a series of files. So Mark tests Maggie’s knowledge of what file extensions are supported within a shapefile. SHP? DBF? SHX? This game show will make you LOL!
