In May 2017, Lake Ontario rose to a 100-year high. As a result, the Toronto Islands were inundated and 46,000 sandbags were placed. A series of maps was produced using LiDAR to identify the areas threatened by the rising waters. The lake level was modelled in 10-cm increments, and that area was intersected with building footprints. These maps were used by the Office of Emergency Management and sandbagging crews.
