How Kelowna Broke Down Asset Data Silos for $7.8B in Infrastructure

When you're managing $7.8 billion worth of infrastructure comprising 30,000 different assets, scattered systems aren't just inefficient—they're unsustainable. By addressing exactly this kind of siloing problem, the City of Kelowna has transformed its municipal asset management process in a way that’s saving taxpayers millions. Asset management systems analyst Greg Maier's 31-year journey at the City of Kelowna shows the real impact of getting asset management right. He’s seen the City move from Excel spreadsheets and paper clipboards to an enterprise-wide Trimble Cityworks implementation that empowers 27 departments and 750+ users with all the capabilities they need. The transformation: Sidewalk inspections went from experiencing 6–8 week delays to being able to be processed the next day. By optimizing its snow removal workflow, the City has saved overtime costs while getting crews home to their families on Christmas Eve. And now Maier’s fleet management team can order parts the moment they’re needed. Better GPS accuracy has also enabled sidewalk inspection crews to flag on-the-ground issues with 20–30 cm accuracy, leading to more accurate issue tracking (the previous system had a 5–6 m range). The results: Daily data delivery is replacing previously months-long information delays. The City is also able to provide a higher level of service, and supply its City Council with defensible data to support its decisions. "It takes the emotion out of the argument. When we can give Council the data, we can prove what we need for proper service levels." —Greg Maier, Asset Management System Analyst, City of Kelowna Discover how Cityworks can help you manage your entire infrastructure portfolio: https://www.esri.ca/en-ca/products/specialized-applications/cityworks?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=kelowna-assetmgmt-2025 Chapters: 00:00 The $7.8 billion challenge 00:39 From silos to integrated information systems 01:13 Transforming sidewalk inspections using geospatial technology 01:37 How technology is serving Kelowna’s taxpayers 02:00 The human element #AssetManagement #SmartCities #Cityworks #DigitalTransformation #Kelowna #EsriCanada #PublicWorks #LocalGovernment #GIS #Esri
