Esri Canada Named Platinum Winner of Canada’s Best Managed Companies

GIS provider named to the highest level of the Best Managed program on its 35th year in business

TORONTO – March 7, 2019 – Esri Canada, the country’s leading geographic information systems (GIS) provider, has been named a Platinum Club winner of Canada’s Best Managed Companies program, a national business awards program recognizing Canadian-owned and managed companies for innovative, world-class business practices. The program is sponsored by Deloitte Private, CIBC, Canadian Business, Smith School of Business and TMX. Esri Canada has maintained its Best Managed designation since 2012, climbing to the Gold Standard in 2015. Now, on the company’s 35th anniversary, it has reached the highest level possible, Platinum.

Esri Canada is a rare company; privately-owned and an acknowledged champion in the ever-changing tech sector, it has enjoyed positive year-over-year growth since it was founded by Alex and Mary-Charlotte Miller in 1984.

“One of the most important elements of our success is our focus on enabling better information-sharing and collaboration within organizations and communities. I’m proud that we have helped businesses and governments in Canada work together better, ensuring that we can build a more sustainable society,” said Alex Miller, president, Esri Canada.

Esri Canada has a strong tradition of partnering. Working with authoritative community sources, it launched the Community Map of Canada, the first comprehensive, freely available, constantly updated digital basemap of Canada that is free for everyone to use. The company donated software and expertise so that maps of the longest trail in the world, Canada's Great Trail, are easily accessed by everybody. Further engaging in environmental sustainability, Esri Canada also donated software to Vélo Québec to improve the map of the Route Verte (Green Route), the longest bike route in North America (5,300 kilometres+). The new web mapping app allows cyclists to see constantly updated, practical information about routes and road conditions, among other things, in French and English.

Esri Canada’s software has helped governments break silos and share information for the public safety of everyone. Hundreds of people in 32 federal departments now use the Operations Centre Information Portal  that uses a mapping tool to connect different departments’ computer systems. This means that emergency management organizations and first responders can exchange real-time information and alerts on everything from a forest fire or oil spill, to security arrangements for visits from international dignitaries.

Another national achievement requiring massive cooperation is the Federal Geospatial Platform. It is a website that integrates economic, social and environmental geospatial data from multiple departments, so that people can easily find and view it on maps. This enables evidence-based decisions, increases efficiencies and fosters innovation.

“The contribution these companies provide to Canada cannot be overstated. Every year, Best Managed winners are raising the bar of excellence in Canadian business,” said Peter Brown, partner, Deloitte Private and co-leader, Canada’s Best Managed Companies program.

About Canada’s Best Managed Companies
Canada's Best Managed Companies continues to be the mark of excellence for Canadian-owned and managed companies with revenues over $15 million. Every year since the launch of the program in 1993, hundreds of entrepreneurial companies have competed for this designation in a rigorous and independent process that evaluates their management skills and practices. The awards are granted on four levels: 1) Canada’s Best Managed Companies new winner (one of the new winners selected each year); 2) Canada’s Best Managed Companies winner (award recipients that have re-applied and successfully retained their Best Managed designation for two additional years, subject to annual operational and financial review); 3) Gold Standard winner (after three consecutive years of maintaining their Best Managed status, these winners have demonstrated their commitment to the program and successfully retained their award for 4-6 consecutive years); 4) Platinum Club member (winners that have maintained their Best Managed status for seven years or more). Program sponsors are Deloitte Private, CIBC, Canadian Business, Smith School of Business, and TMX Group. For more information, visit www.bestmanagedcompanies.ca.
