I n Volume 1 of Geospatial Strategy Essentials for Managers, I shared a selection of experiences and insights drawn from my years working with different organizations on their geospatial strategies. My hope was that those lessons would serve as an educational shortcut for those interested in learning about concepts and frameworks used by strategy consultants and applying them to the geospatial discipline— especially those tasked with building and growing a geospatial program. Ultimately, the goal was to help quench the thirst of geospatial professionals and non-professionals for strategy- related content. As it turns out, people want more! Since Volume 1's publication, the demand for strategic content has grown tremendously. I see it in the growing audiences attending strategy-related seminars, reading and responding to articles, and reaching out for guidance and consulting help. Volume 1, it appears, was just the tip of the iceberg. With Geospatial Strategy Essentials for Managers: Volume 2, I've continued with the philosophy of providing readers with distilled learnings from the field. However, I'm pleased to incorporate the insights of other strategy practitioners from Esri Canada in this volume. As you'll notice, several chapters are authored or co-authored by consultants from our Management Consulting practice. This ensures that a different and broader perspective is brought to bear in this version of the e-book. In Volume 2, we dive into topics not covered in Volume 1. Specifically, a significant portion of this e-book is dedicated to people development and culture-building. These are the "soft skill" areas Volume 1 didn't cover in depth but that are critical to building and sustaining an effective geospatial program. We also expand further on topics related to governance and strategy development. These were topics covered in Volume 1, but in this version, we dive deeper and highlight tools and frameworks that will help you put the theory covered in Volume 1 into practice. Part 1: People and Culture—In Part 1, we discuss the importance of building a culture that embraces and is motivated to use geospatial technology and geospatial thinking in its day-to- day work. We look at specific cultural practices 03 | GEOSPATIAL STRATEGY ESSENTIALS FOR MANAGERS VOLUME 2 Foreword
