When forest fires threaten communities, the Manitoba FireSmart program’s values-at-risk inventory and pre-response plan maps serve as invaluable resources for emergency responders. The values-at-risk database is created using GPS to collect location data for schools, houses, businesses, public spaces, cultural sites and utilities in communities at risk from wildfire threats. Values-at-risk can be overlaid with orthophotos and fuel types in a pre-response plan map, which serves as an operational plan that fire response agencies can use during a wildland or urban interface fire operation.
