This map illustrates the number of firefighters in Oshawa, Ontario who are able to reach the city’s urban area within 8 minutes of travel along the road network. ArcGIS Network Analyst was used to calibrate the road network based on historical travel times recorded by the fire department throughout the city. Using minimum staffing and the service area around each station, the department can determine the number of staff able to reach certain areas within the city. This model also allows them to take into consideration future conditions (population growth) and predict future staffing needs and response capabilities.
