2 | FALL 2017 ArcNorthNews PRESIDENT'S LETTER // Alex Miller As 2017 comes to a close, I look back and am amazed at how fast GIS technology is evolving. With new and enhanced capabilities in ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro, the ArcGIS platform is ushering in a whole new era of collaboration across Canada and around the world. We're seeing maps and apps becoming more pervasive as organizations apply The Science of Where to transform their internal workfl ows and customer services. In fact, they are not limited to GIS experts anymore, but they are becoming an important tool for all professionals to do a better job, regardless of the industry they're in. In this issue of ArcNorth News, we feature stories that demonstrate how enterprise-wide use of geographic information systems is driving digital transformation in organizations. In Ontario, Utilities Kingston has deployed GIS-based digital solutions to nearly all their services, empowering their employees as well as customers with valuable data for better decision-making. Meanwhile, Manitoba Sustainable Development has taken effi ciency to a new level by implementing smart digital strategies for sustainable forest management. You will also learn about the GeoFoundation Exchange, an initiative that brings transactional geospatial data from multiple sources into a single, nationwide basemap – the Community Map of Canada. We also share the story of ParcelMap BC, the complete, sustainable electronic map of active titled parcels and surveyed provincial Crown land parcels in British Columbia. This map earned the Land Title and Survey Authority the prestigious Esri Special Achievement in GIS award for their innovative use of GIS technology to improve the world. For our Partner Solution Profi le, we interviewed Wendy Amy of Calgary-based MNC, a company that has pioneered the idea of digital survey plan submissions and georeferencing of cadastral data. Wendy will share the secrets of how MNC is using advanced digital techniques in their work to stay ahead of the competition. As we encourage everyone to apply mapping and analytics to whatever they do, we are motivated to work harder and see how we can bring better technology and solutions to our user community. Chris North will explore how GIS is urging us to move from descriptive to predictive and ultimately, prescriptive analytics. Who would have thought that possible a few years ago? The iCity initiative in Toronto, in which we are a participant, is a good example of where 3D geovisualization is used to prescribe smart solutions for smart cities. And this is only the beginning. MNC est devenue une pionnière en matière de soumission électronique des plans d'arpentage et de géoréférencement des donnes cadastrales. Wendy nous confi era les secrets de MNC sur son utilisation de techniques numériques avancées dans le cadre de son travail, qui lui permettent de toujours devancer la concurrence. Étant donné que nous encourageons tout le monde à appliquer la cartographie et les analyses à tout ce qu'ils font, nous sommes amenés à travailler plus fort et à voir comment nous pouvons fournir de meilleures technologies et solutions à notre communauté d'utilisateurs. Chris North explorera la façon dont les SIG nous poussent à passer des analyses descriptives aux prédictives et, fi nalement, aux prescriptives. Qui aurait cru ça possible il y a seulement quelques années? L'initiative iCity de Toronto, à laquelle nous participons, constitue un bon exemple d'utilisation des géovisualisations 3D en vue de prescrire des solutions intelligentes aux villes intelligentes.
