GIS Ambassador Ian Manning Community Focus Nova Scotia Schools • Glooscap Elementary School • Islands Consolidated School Ian Manning is a Nova Scotia-based master's student and research associate in applied geomatics who shares the educational value of maps and geographic information systems (GIS). Ian demonstrates his passion for geography, nature and GIS by participating in presentations and workshops for K-12 students and the public. As a summer student, he worked and volunteered at government agencies, environmental non-profits, local naturalist groups and Scouts Canada. For several years, Ian visited Glooscap Elementary School in Canning, NS on GIS Day, where he shared his GIS experience with students, and they had the opportunity to work on a mapping activity. In November 2016, Ian conducted a GIS Day workshop for a group of grade 6 and 7 students from Islands Consolidated School in Freeport, NS. He introduced the students to the basics of GIS and discussed the history of the Big Meadow Bog on Brier Island and the ongoing conservation monitoring with his story map. During the session, students created maps with ArcGIS Online to explore the change in bog habitats over time. Ian's dynamic workshop was so well received that he has been requested to come back to work with the students. This time, he plans to share the results of some of his field work, including how he has used GIS to classify vegetation types in the bog. "Teaching kids GIS and mapping is important because it provides them with a way to incorporate spatial information into decision- making and share information in a way that's visually pleasing and easy to understand."
