GIS Ambassador Frank King Community Focus Halifax, NS School • Oxford School Frank King is a Halifax-based GIS consultant who is a champion for the educational value of maps and geographic information systems (GIS). Frank has shown his passion for geography and GIS as an ambassador at Oxford School, his alma mater. He began volunteering at the school as a parent and chess coach. Frank realized that he wanted to make both students and teachers aware of how GIS could help them understand issues, analyze data and solve problems. For the past few years, he has presented to students at the school on GIS Day. In 2016, he hosted five 50-minute classes for students from grades 4 to 7. Each workshop included a presentation on the importance of GIS and examples of interesting maps such as the Halifax Crime Map, Hurricane Public Information Map and the Air Flight Tracker. As a GIS Ambassador, Frank has also worked with the Halifax Regional School Board to support students and teachers beyond GIS Day with using ArcGIS Online subscriptions. His future plans include volunteering at other schools in the Halifax area. "Students are challenged to connect what they learn in school to what they can do in the real world. Providing examples of how various levels of government, utilities and private sector companies use GIS opens their eyes to how it is a critical tool in today's technological world."
