The GeoFoundation Exchange (GFX) With traditional mapping initiatives, a signifi cant lag time commonly exists between data updates and data transfer to the national Web basemap. This lag often results in duplicate efforts, unsynchronized data and a lack of standards in workfl ows and terminology. The GeoFoundation Exchange solves this problem by providing a secure, federated data exchange infrastructure shared among all levels of Canadian government, non-government organizations, industry and academia. It allows seamless, up-to-date data collection through an open, Web-based system via the Community Map of Canada Program and other open data initiatives. Supported by GeoConnections, a national collaborative initiative led by Natural Resources Canada, the GFX plays a central role in the creation and maintenance of the most current national Web basemap of Canada. The system supports the automated, bi-directional exchange of information, providing all agencies and the public with consistent, current and authoritative data for the national Web basemap. Data becomes open and accessible, increasing the availability of information to Canadians and facilitating greater citizen engagement with politicians, the public sector and government programs. Using best of breed design, the GFX accommodates basemaps generated through the Community Map of Canada Program, as well as the CMDM. It's free to access and easy to use.
