Challenge In 2009, The Saint John Police Force first implemented their hybrid Intelligence-led Policing (ILP) model, which blends best practices in policing with an evidence-based approach to crime reduction. It is a future-oriented and targeted approach to crime control that focuses on the identification, analysis and management of persistent or developing problems. It can also be described as a 'layered' approach to crime reduction where new strategies are continually developed, refined and applied to consistently drive down crime activity, even in areas that have already shown a significant reduction. At the core of the ILP model is a commitment to evidence- based decision-making which is achieved through crime mapping. Crime mapping equips crime fighters with geographic literacy by turning a wealth of police records into meaningful visuals that can be used for discussion and analysis. A second and equally important element of ILP is the active engagement of community partners. To better involve the public in the fight against crime, the Saint John Police Force looked for the right software solution that would extend the reach of crime mapping beyond the office, to become a powerful citizen engagement tool. Saint John Police Force leverages crowdsourced mapping for safer streets For residents of Saint John, New Brunswick, researching local crime activity is now as simple as reaching for their smartphones. As part of a visionary, Intelligence-led Policing (ILP) model, The Saint John Police Force implemented CrimeMapping.com – a Web- based mapping tool that puts near real-time crime information at the fingertips of the general public. As a result, the police force has successfully engaged the community in monitoring civil behavior, enabling the public to become a true partner in the fight against crime. 1 Esri Canada | Building Safer Communities through Citizen Engagement
