Challenge Work management is integral to keeping infrastructure safe and operational. This requires managing labour, material and equipment, while recording the time and costs associated with keeping assets operational. With a population of approximately 140,000, The City of Barrie is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country and as such, must effectively manage an infrastructure that is constantly changing and expanding. Prior to implementing Cityworks, the City's work management system was largely comprised of manual processes within several departments including Water, Roads & Parks. There was no mechanism in place to link assets with records of work performed: work order information would be recorded in Microsoft Excel or Word documents and stored in filing cabinets, preventing the ability to call up the asset's history for analysis or reporting. The City also lacked an automated process for recording and distributing service requests, tracking costs associated with work occurring throughout the City or closing out work orders once maintenance was complete. To more effectively manage its growing infrastructure, the City would need to centralize access to data and automate work management functions. Growing municipality automates work management to meet service demands and regulatory requirements Today's municipalities face growing challenges due to the aging and deterioration of assets, rising demand levels and new requirements to comply with environmental and accounting regulations. In response, municipalities must implement increasingly complex and sophisticated infrastructure management processes that demand an enormous volume of information to be generated and reported. The award-winning City of Barrie met this challenge head on by adopting Cityworks: a GIS-based asset and work management solution that allows the municipality to centralize interdepartmental processes and streamline the maintenance and repair of its growing infrastructure. 1 Esri Canada | City of Barrie optimizes infrastructure management using Cityworks
