Solution In partnership with Esri Canada, ReNew developed a Web application that maps over $114 billion in infrastructure investments across the country. To build the app, ReNew leveraged Esri's ArcGIS Viewer for Flex – a free, ready-to- deploy viewer application that is configurable, allowing tools and content to be readily added to the application. The ArcGIS API for Flex was also used to add custom widgets including a charting widget that provides deeper insight into the data. Based on the free Adobe Flex framework, the API leverages resources from ArcGIS for Server such as maps, locators, feature services and geoprocessing models for rich, expressive Internet applications. The Web app reads point-based data from a .csv file and displays it on top of basemaps supplied at no-cost through Esri Canada's Community Maps Program. The Program takes authoritative data from all levels of government and mapping organizations, renders it with uniform cartography and integrates the data into a World Topographic Map. This map along with other high performance basemaps are hosted and made available on ArcGIS Online – a Web-based platform where users can readily access a wealth of content for use in GIS applications. Benefits Using out-of-the-box tools and user-friendly APIs, ReNew was able to build a robust, multifunctional Web app both quickly and cost effectively. Resource and infrastructure barriers were eliminated through free access to rich, authoritative data on ArcGIS Online. Citizens can now access specific stats and data via an interactive map to search for projects by dollar value, sector, location or funding type, to quickly and easily get the information that they need. The interactive Web app serves as a vital research tool, enabling users to see how investments impact their neighbourhoods and where their taxpayer dollars are being spent. Contractors and suppliers can look up projects for potential opportunities. Businesses can research projects being developed to determine future locations for their site. In addition, municipalities seeking infrastructure funding can improve their applications by viewing projects in other regions that have successfully obtained grants. The Web GIS is also an ideal accountability reporting system for governments, and provides a cost effective way to show where and how tax payers' dollars are being spent. The app template developed for this application is now available for public use on arcgis.com. Visualizing Canada's Top 100 Projects through the Power of Web Mapping | Esri Canada 2 The interactive Web app reads point-based data from a .csv file and displays it on top of basemap data generated through Esri Canada's Community Maps Program. Users can research projects by dollar value, sector, location or funding type, to quickly and easily get the information that they need. " We assumed that much more programming and resources would be required to build an app with this depth of functionality. However, by leveraging readily available tools and data, we were able to build a compelling Web map for the public, quickly and on budget." Chris Tully Renew Canada
