An underground subdivision is easily edited using the ArcFM Attribute Editor productivity tool. This map is used by planning engineers to identify candidate areas for underground cable replacement. Solution PowerStream selected Telvent's ArcFM product suite – an integrated suite of facility mapping, engineering design and outage management applications built upon Esri's ArcGIS platform – to serve as a central repository for its network asset data. It is an enterprise solution that leverages location and connectivity of network data so that an electric utility can dramatically streamline its business processes. The solution easily extends its functionality to mobile computing for field operations and to DMS for smart grid operations. PowerStream implemented Telvent's Designer to accelerate the engineering design process. Technicians can now step through designs from initial concept to construction to as-built directly within the ArcFM geodatabase. Designer can be deployed as a mobile or enterprise solution and it supports cost estimating, workflow management, structural and network analysis as well as full import/export of CAD files from 3rd parties. PowerStream also implemented Telvent's Responder – an add-on outage management application and integrated it with its SCADA and Smart Metering systems. Responder relies on connectivity of network data to swiftly pinpoint network faults when an outage occurs. Rather than await customer calls to learn of an outage occurrence, newly implemented smart meters communicate 'last gasp' alerts directly with Responder so that the utility knows when and where a network failure has occurred. Benefits PowerStream's investment in the ArcGIS platform including add-on capabilities has positioned the utility as a leader amongst its peers. With the introduction of ArcFM, outage management, engineering design and facility mapping can all be performed from a common repository of network data. Field staff can quickly find equipment for maintenance inspections, and operations staff can easily identify equipment to safely isolate it for planned maintenance. This saves time and promotes self sufficiency throughout the organization. PowerStream has also been able to add out-of-the-box third party applications that run on top of the ArcGIS platform. For example, they implemented iLOOKABOUT, a curb-side high resolution imagery application, onto the ArcGIS platform so that finance/legal users now inspect joint-use assets right from the office. This solution has reduced site visits by over 90%. The introduction of Telvent's Designer has eliminated all redrawing and manual steps so that a technician's time can be used to optimize designs, quickly estimate design costs on-the-fly and complete more designs on a daily basis. This has enabled the utility to successfully eliminate engineering backlog. Finally, with Telvent's Responder, PowerStream can dispatch service crews immediately to resolve outage situations, dramatically improving network reliability, restoration and customer satisfaction. Enterprise GIS solution positions PowerStream as an industry leader | Esri Canada 2 " By implementing an end-to- end integrated enterprise solution, we have single handedly improved our operational efficiency, customer satisfaction and network reliability."
