Challenge
Essex County is Canada's southernmost County and home
to seven municipalities. As one of many services that the
County supplies to its municipalities, Essex provides aerial
imagery that is used for planning, asset management and
emergency response. In 2006, they decided to improve
their imagery services by switching from grayscale to full
colour. However, when the GIS department attempted to
store the aerial photography and serve it up through legacy
technology, the interactive mapping sites became unstable
and prone to crash during a request.
The images were simply too large to display in the
manner that the County and municipalities had become
accustomed to and they were in need of a new approach
to image management that would alleviate capacity
issues. Facing growing demands from multiple County
and municipal departments including engineering, public
works, infrastructure management and permitting, Essex
also needed a solution that would promote an extremely
efficient workflow. It was imperative that implementing this
tool would not disrupt the County's ability to supply imagery
to the general public over the Web.
Essex County delivers a clear picture with
full-colour imagery
When Essex County decided to upgrade their imagery from grayscale to full colour,
it nearly tripled the size of the required storage capacity, causing their systems to
crash. Implementing a unique solution enabled the municipality to quickly overcome
this challenge, eliminate costly delays and serve up high quality imagery to both area
municipalities and to the public.
