2 | SPRING 2014 ArcNorthNews PRESIDENT'S LETTER // Alex Miller In nature, species that thrive tend to adapt to change very effectively: Charles Darwin taught us this many years ago. In GIS, a solution must be developed based on a thorough understanding of a customer's needs. Roger Tomlinson—the inventor of GIS—taught me this when I began my GIS career. Combined together, these two powerful ideas from two revolutionary thinkers form the foundation of the success Esri Canada has enjoyed over the past 30 years. As a company, our collective ability to advance GIS technology has always been driven by what our customers tell us. It has been your ideas, insights and feedback guiding us during this incredible journey which began in December 1984 when I founded Esri Canada. Looking back, it still amazes me how far we've come from a small start-up with one offi ce in Toronto that served seven organizations, to a company with 16 offi ces throughout Canada working with more than 10,000 customers across all industries. Of course, our technology has changed, too. When Esri Canada fi rst started, ArcGIS didn't even exist. Back then, it was known as ARC/INFO and you really had to know your stuff to use it. But all that has changed now. Today, our cloud-based ArcGIS platform is more accessible, easier to integrate into existing systems and can be used by just about anybody—GIS analysts, marketers, executives, public citizens, students. Its core functionality, however, remains the same: it's a platform designed to help you answer questions and solve problems. In this issue, you'll travel through 30 years of GIS innovation that began with Roger Tomlinson's invention of GIS. You'll read about the evolution of ArcGIS from a tool to a platform, beginning with a look at Esri Canada's early beginnings and the pivotal role Ontario municipalities played in the development of the company. You'll also fi nd out how the Canadian forestry industry and municipalities were early GIS adopters that developed the groundbreaking systems that still infl uence technology today. Flashing forward to the present, you'll read how BC Assessment is revolutionizing property assessment using 3D modelling. I hope you enjoy reading this special 30th anniversary edition which not only celebrates past accomplishments that helped to shape GIS technology, but also the many new achievements that are allowing us to continue to forge important new paths for the world at large. Dans le cas des SIG, la conception d'une solution doit reposer sur une connaissance approfondie des besoins du client. C'est Roger Tomlinson, l'inventeur des SIG, qui m'a inculqué cette notion au tout début de ma carrière dans le domaine. Voilà deux idées porteuses soutenues par deux penseurs révolutionnaires. Ces idées mises ensemble sont le fondement même du succès d'Esri Canada ces trente dernières années. Notre capacité de faire évoluer la technologie SIG a toujours été motivée par l'écoute de nos clients. Ce sont vos idées, vos connaissances et vos commentaires qui nous ont aiguillés tout au long de cet incroyable parcours amorcé en décembre 1984, lorsque j'ai créé Esri Canada. Je suis toujours stupéfait du chemin parcouru lorsque je pense à cette petite entreprise en démarrage qui desservait sept organisations à partir d'un petit bureau à Toronto, et qui dessert maintenant plus de 10 000 clients de tous les secteurs d'activité dans 16 bureaux au Canada. Bien entendu, notre technologie a également évolué. Au moment de la fondation d'Esri Canada, ArcGIS n'existait même pas. À l'époque, la solution portait le nom d'ARC/INFO, et elle était plutôt réservée aux connaisseurs. Cette époque est bel et bien révolue. Aujourd'hui, notre plateforme infonuagique ArcGIS est largement accessible et elle s'intègre facilement dans des systèmes existants. Par ailleurs, elle peut être utilisée par à peu près tout le monde : analystes SIG, spécialistes du marketing, dirigeants, citoyens et étudiants. Cela dit, ses principales fonctionnalités demeurent les mêmes : il s'agit d'une plateforme conçue pour vous aider à trouver des réponses et à résoudre des problèmes. Le présent numéro vous permettra de faire un survol de 30 années d'innovation depuis l'invention des SIG par Roger Tomlinson. Vous découvrirez l'histoire derrière l'évolution d'ArcGIS, un outil devenu plateforme, en explorant notamment les débuts d'Esri Canada et le rôle moteur de certaines municipalités de l'Ontario dans la croissance de l'entreprise. Vous apprendrez également que l'industrie forestière et les municipalités canadiennes ont été des pionnières dans l'adoption des SIG, et qu'elles ont conçu des systèmes novateurs dont l'infl uence sur la technologie se fait toujours sentir.
