2 | SPRING 2016 ArcNorthNews PRESIDENT'S LETTER // Alex Miller Most organizations are brimming with information and aspirations. What they commonly lack is the vital connection between the two: a system that harnesses information and synthesizes it into actionable intelligence to help them achieve business objectives. This requires managing and organizing information in a way that engages people across the enterprise. For most organizations, this is easier said than done. By default, information tends to get locked up in disconnected silos that are managed by different teams and departments. Eventually, this inhibits informed decision-making which, in turn, creates barriers to success. This leaves many organizations wondering how they can get information to work for them, not against them. The answer lies with ArcGIS. It is a system of engagement that allows organizations to consolidate enterprise-wide data, manage it in one system and share it throughout an organization and beyond. Through web GIS, data can be securely shared through the cloud in maps and apps that empower GIS professionals, knowledge workers, executives, casual users and the open data community. In this issue of ArcNorth News, we're exploring how ArcGIS helps you turn information into innovation. You'll read how the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources achieved a 75% time savings by combining LiDAR and GIS to conduct a large-scale, provincial forest inventory. You'll discover how the City of Hamilton is applying ArcGIS across its organization to reorganize engineering documents, manage a streetlight replacement program and promote investment in the city. You'll also learn how the GIS and IT departments at the City of Coquitlam collaborated to efficiently deploy a series of internal apps by leveraging out-of-the-box tools available through ArcGIS. In Partner Solution Profile, we interviewed Mary Jo Nye, Clevest Solutions' Product Marketing Manager, to find out more about Mobile Workforce Management, a solution created specifically for utility companies that enables the seamless flow of information between the field and the office. Finally, in his column, 'View from the North', Chris North argues that it's time for the GIS community to extend more analytics tools to non-traditional users so they can achieve greater insights through spatial analysis. I have no doubt that you'll find the articles in this issue of ArcNorth News as enjoyable as I did. It's my hope that they inspire you to expand the use of GIS across your organization. La plupart des organisations sont submergées par un grand volume d'information et par le poids de leurs aspirations. Le problème découle souvent de l'absence d'un lien essentiel entre les deux, soit un système capable d'exploiter l'information et de la synthétiser en des leviers de décision au service des objectifs d'affaires. Un tel système doit reposer sur une gestion et une organisation de l'information mobilisant l'ensemble du personnel. Or, cela est loin d'être simple dans bien des organisations. L'information est souvent stockée en silos non connectés entre eux et gérés par différentes équipes ou différents services. Cette façon de fonctionner est un frein à la prise de décision éclairée et une véritable barrière à la réussite. C'est pourquoi bon nombre d'organisations cherchent une solution pour transformer le fardeau de l'information en un levier vers le succès. Cette solution, c'est ArcGIS. Ce système incitant à la participation permet aux organisations de regrouper les données de l'ensemble de l'entreprise, de les gérer sur un seul système et de les partager tant à l'interne que dans le vaste monde. En effet, le SIG web permet de partager les données de façon sécuritaire dans le nuage, afin d'alimenter des cartes et des applications destinées aux spécialistes des SIG, aux travailleurs du savoir, aux dirigeants, aux utilisateurs occasionnels et à la vaste communauté des utilisateurs de données ouvertes. Ce numéro d' ArcNorth News explore la façon dont ArcGIS vous aide à transformer l'information en innovation. Vous y découvrirez comment le ministère des Ressources naturelles du Nouveau-Brunswick a réalisé une économie en temps de 75 % en combinant un LiDAR et un SIG pour procéder à un inventaire forestier à l'échelle de la province. Vous verrez comment la Ville de Hamilton réorganise ses documents techniques, gère son programme de remplacement des lampadaires et fait la promotion des investissements dans la ville en déployant ArcGIS dans l'ensemble de son organisation.
