GIS Ambassador Larisa Johnstone Community Focus Windsor, ON Schools • Dr. David Suzuki Public School • Walkerville Collegiate Institute Larisa Johnstone is a Windsor-based GIS professional who is a passionate believer in the educational value of maps and geographic information systems (GIS). Ms. Johnstone decided to extend her passion for geography and GIS into her community by volunteering at her daughter's elementary class at Dr. David Suzuki Public School in spring 2015. She began by spending a few hours teaching her daughter's class mapping basics and how she applies GIS at work. Ms. Johnstone's main goal was to get teachers excited about ArcGIS Online. She demonstrated how ArcGIS Online technology, particularly story maps, can be used in lessons beyond the geography classroom. Ms. Johnstone gave several teachers a crash course on how to create a basic story map and pointed them to additional online resources, such as story map video tutorials and GIS-lesson plans available from Esri Canada. Ms. Johnstone's GIS session was so well received that other teachers in the school asked her to lead similar presentations in their classrooms.
