GIS Ambassador Zoe Goodyear Community Focus St. John's, NL School Holy Heart High School Zoe Goodyear believes deeply in the importance of geography and GIS to help understand our world and solve its many challenges. After graduating from Memorial University with a diploma in Geographic Information Sciences she sought an opportunity to impart her love for GIS to students in the St. John's area. When Zoe learned about Esri Canada's GIS Ambassador Program, she contacted the company's Education & Research group to fi nd out how she could get involved. The group promptly connected Ms. Goodyear with Amy Slaney-Howell, a teacher at Holy Heart High School in St. John's, NL. Ms. Slaney-Howell wanted a GIS Ambassador to help expand on the GIS lessons being taught in her grade 12 World Geography classes. In October 2015, Ms. Goodyear visited the school to teach students about GIS and its relevance in the real world using resources developed by Esri Canada's K-12 group that are available through ArcGIS Online. She also introduced students to career options in the growing fi eld of geotechnologies. The grade 12 students were intrigued by the real-world applications and also impressed by the breadth and diversity of industries applying GIS to help understand and solve important issues. Based on the lesson's success, Ms. Slaney-Howell plans to invite Ms. Goodyear back to lead another lesson. Ms. Goodyear works at a public library in St John's, where she conducts technology training workshops for kids and adults. At the library, she facilitates an introductory GIS workshop for children, which involves exercises such as mapping favourite places in St. John's or using ArcGIS Online story maps to explore different subjects.
