Roads and highways connect communities; and are akin to arteries vital for survival. As cities grow, the need for accurate and actionable data to manage roadways increases. It is with this challenge in mind that the City of Penticton selected Esri Canada to provide a solution. The City of Penticton adopted Esri Roads and Highways, a linear referencing system (LRS) solution to get a comprehensive view of their roadways. This helped in the ease of visualizing and maintaining road networks, creating transparency and eliminating data silos. As a result, encouraging city-wide consumption of data and participation in data management; laying the foundation for a smart future. Esri Roads and Highways helped the City of Penticton gain a comprehensive view of its roadways and enable better asset data management. Faced with a $76.8 million general infrastructure deficit in 2015, the City of Penticton – located in the beautiful Okanagan Valley in central-southern British Columbia – was looking for ways to deal with the increasing deficit. With a population of approximately 33,761 residents, the City manages 184 kilometres of roads and 143 kilometres of walkways and sidewalks, among other infrastructure assets. When the municipality completed its data and asset management audit in 2016, it realized that road network data is stored and managed in different places and by different people, causing errors and delays in providing the right information. They understood that the data management of the aging infrastructure required more attention– the population wasn't growing as much as the cost of maintaining infrastructure data had been. In the long run, it could start impacting municipal taxes if they didn't consider adopting a foundation for strategic data management for all its assets as physical infrastructure directly impacts taxes. 1 Esri Canada | Enabling Effective Data Management of Roads in Penticton Challenge The City crew repairing a water main break.
